I look forward to accompanying you and others on a journey through the mists...your work with Dan Rather on Steady has been a constant reminder not to give up on the best within us during the worst of times. Thanks, Elliott.
I love the name of this, and the thinking that brought it about. I can't wait to get your thoughts in my inbox, and I'm grateful that you will share them with the world!
Looking forward to your views through the fog, Eilliot. I have been a fan of yours and Dan's "Steady" and commented there frequently. Dan and I are from the same generation although he is ahead of me by 5 years! Yes, "god willing the creek don't rise" I will pass 87 in June, 2024. So, in the words of J. K. Simmons in that insurance ad, "We know a thing or two because we have seen a thing or two." It's corny but when we have lived through 8 decades and been actively engaged in working to bring positive changes to our culture, we have earned our stripes.
Your description of San Francisco’s fog took me back to July 4, 1976. We moved to the City by the Bay in 1975 and were fortunate to find a wonderful group of friends from all over the USA — even some California natives — with whom we celebrated the holiday. We had a great plan to see the Bicentennial fireworks as one of our chosen family lived across from a park on a hill not far from the Golden Gate Bridge. That was where we would set up our party. An excellent plan but when we arrived we found that a heavy fog had rolled in also. All I remember is being among a group of 20 or more of us blindly wandering through the park’s trees while hearing the sounds of the display, but never seeing a single spark. Yes, the title of your letter truly does honor San Francisco and our current situation. We look forward to your commentary.
Hello Elliot, I’m thrilled to see you starting your own newsletter, and I plan to follow you on this journey. Your work with Dan Rather, probably one of the greatest reporters and news personalities of all time, was thoroughly enjoyable. I also love the name of your newsletter; I think it perfectly sums up where we are headed in 2024. But I do believe that by the end of this next year, we will be seeing happy endings and some relief from what we’ve been through thus far. Happy new year to you and your loved ones.
"Double like" button pushed ! *(maybe even triple liked if I find it - Hi Janet !) (Eg., I read these comments from the bottom up. As you'll see, the triple like button still eludes my discovery - lol)
Having been raised in CA’s Central Valley, I know SF fog and our Tule fog. The way fog descends and lifts, flows or hugs the ground, isolates, and dampens sound are further definition of the metaphorical application to life. The past 8 years have demonstrated how appropriate it is. Something fundamental has changed, but I’m not ready to give in to the fog as an instrument of unhealthy isolation. I welcome the comfort of the solitude it provides when I have access to the voices who bring clarity, optimism, and hope. Thank you for being one of those voices! I’ll look forward to your beacon penetrating from time to time. Best wishes in the new year.
Count me in! I’m a professor in a school of education and social policy , and share many of your interests. Also used to live in SF. Looking fwd to the conversation
Excited for your new adventure Through the Fog! Thank you for your insights and curiosity about challenges in the world. Much needed as the world often seems to be tumbling into an abyss. May we all find respite with one another through words, inspiration, and compassion, and climb our way together out of dark holes that aim to swallow us whole.

Thank you. Glad you're here Mark. If you're not in the fog, you will be mist.
Congratulations Elliot! I'm excited to be along for the ride.
Thank you, Tim. The ride may be bumpy. But it’s nice to know you’ll be here.
Congrats on this new adventure... am sure it will be fascinating and successful!
Thank you. Allen. Fascinating is a goal. But to be able to share thoughts with others already feels like a success.
