You now have a podium and and an audience. This year more than ever it is important to speak out.

My grandparents and parents were victims of Nazism in occupied Poland. Despite my Jewish married name I am not. They were ordinary Polish citizens.

History may not repeat but I do see echos. I don’t think the US can survive another Trump presidency and it will take longer than my lifetime for the rest of the world to recover. We need your voice. And thank you for all you do.

I consider you part of my community even though I rarely comment here; it’s a gift to read your thoughts, think, share, etc. More than a hobby; the nation is so disconnected if not openly hostile, this is a place of mutual community and hope for positive outcomes. Just keep it coming and I’ll be here, just one old lady with her two treasured 😽😽 !

Your stories are certainly not self indulgent. The other thing: you are already there in every sentence, in every word. The way you express your opinions is simply great, fresh air among all the anger and hate. You are what America is, will be, and always has been - apart from the short periods of craziness. Trump will lose the elections in a landslide (30% of the popular vote at the most). And then there will be time to do something about the monsters abroad.

“ There’s a bit about writing this that strikes me as self-indulgent. At times this entire endeavor feels a bit like that as well. In the podcast, Corey asked a lot about my background. I am still trying to figure out how much of myself I share or is of interest to all of you.” I have these same thoughts. Thanks for sharing them. It’s not self indulgent to open up to others though. In fact it’s a gift. You open up your heart and let others in.

Two things.

1. You're always interesting.

2. I live for science.

Well, thanks for maintaining a questioning posture towards yourself and the world. Those who are completely sure of themselves and their view of the world often have no room to contemplate new ideas, different perspectives. If there are two characteristics that make a good writer, they are curiosity and compassion. I think you have displayed both and I encourage you to continue. Your writing triggers the conversation and the responses demonstrate the readers’ engagement, deliberations and a bit of movement in the body politic, which we desperately need in this age of rampant disinformation and misinformation. Fog is ok; encourages us to slow down and observe closely..!

I like the word 'jobby' it is so very descriptive. Since my first teaching position in 1973, all my careers have been jobbys. Going to bed at night looking forward to what I may accomplish the next day, waking up energized and raring to go. Now that I'm old, and physically decrepit, Substack is my jobby.

Thank you Elliot, for pointing this out for me!

To me, what you are doing and saying hearkens back to the little book by C.P. Snow, Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution. We are still, around 70 years later, trying to understand and bridge that gap. I think this work has great value not only in building community but also, aiding society to work in coordination.

Please keep writing for us! While I do not like labelling people, I want you to understand my perspective. I am a 62 yr old Jewish woman, a first college grad in the family, an engineer when there were no women in engineering or construction, a mother of 2 awesome grown sons, celebrating 40 yrs with my hubby. We love living in San Francisco! My Dad was a mailman and my Mom was a telephone operator. I am active in helping San Francisco infrastructure and like being below the radar! I have mentored many young women throughout the years to strive for success and true life balance. And somehow, your writing speaks to me. You say, and rather clearly and eloquently, what I think about. Plus - I do NOT like listening to news and stories or watching videos of people talking! I like reading, at my own pace, allowing me to think and continue reading.

Anyone who manages to craft a "jobby" is a fortunate blender of the professional and the personal.

Your voice is distinctive and strong, your topics are engaging and your pace is admirable. Thanks for chatting with us regularly in this deservedly growing village, Elliot.

Mazel Tov Elliot! May you continue to be blessed by letting yourself shine ✨ in the way you were meant to.

I'm making an assumption that you might be a member of the tribe. My grandfather spelled his last name that same as yours

You say, "I am still trying to figure out how much of myself I share or is of interest to all of you." I'm interested in everything about you that you care to share. My favorite newsletter writers, who include Heather Cox Richardson, Joyce Vance, Sari Botton, and Suleika Jaouad, among many others, write articulately and carefully about world issues, carefully researched. They also write in varying degrees about their personal lives and, in Vance's case, her chickens. I appreciate high quality writing and thinking and insight, and I also want to know how someone grew up, what they felt about school, their vulnerabilities, their interests, how they met their partner. And, In your case, your long career in journalism and working with Mr. Rather. And images are nice to break up the text.
